Training camp isn’t just an opportunity for players to hone their craft and get ready for the season, but with NFL reporters as well. At the end of an interview with Washington Commanders receiver Deebo Samuel, NFL Network host Mike Garafolo casually mentioned that Samuel was battling a finger injury.
Samuel didn’t seem very amused.
Garafolo and Marc Ross were at Commanders’ training camp on Saturday and at the end of practice, conducted an interview with Samuel. Everything seemed to be going just fine as any normal interview. But at the end of the interview, Garafolo tried to wrap things up.
“Deebo Samuel joined us on Inside Training Camp live,” he said. “Usually, I give a handshake when a guy leaves. But I tried to shake your hand on the way up, you said, ‘No no no no. I got a little — I jammed my finger today. Jammed my finger.”
“Oh, was I not supposed to say that?” he asked.

“Nah, I don’t think so,” Ross said.
“Alright, edit that part out,” Garafolo replied. “Strike that, it didn’t happen. I’ll give him a left-handed fist bump. I ain’t getting anything now.”
“That was an amazing interview for like 15 minutes and 45 seconds of it, at least. That was awesome, man. We appreciate you joining us.”
“Damn,” Samuel replied. You fumbled the bag bad.”
Samuel’s reaction was a bit strange given that video of the injury had already been surfacing on social media. Commanders reporter John Keim shared the news that it was just a jammed finger and nothing to worry about.
And yes just a jammed finger. Not serious.

Training camp coverage has been a topic of debate throughout the NFL offseason, but this wasn’t about overhyping stats or performances. It was a funny, slightly awkward moment. And we doubt that pointing to a jammed finger at the beginning of August isn’t going to derail the season of Deebo Samuel or the Washington Commanders. But Samuel didn’t seem too amused with Mike Garofolo and his attempts to make peace after pointing out the news.
