SANDY HOOK, N.J. (PIX11) — A massive dead whale washed up on the shore of Sandy Hook on Wednesday.
The Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine received a report just before 8 a.m. about the whale floating just offshore. Thirty minutes later, the whale made it to the beach.
According to the MMSC, a certified volunteer identified the whale as a Humpback.

This comes just one week after a 40-foot dead whale landed in Rockaway Beach. Officials said that the Sei whale likely died of a boat strike.
There is no known cause of death for the 30-foot whale found in Sandy Hook on Wednesday.

The whale will have a necropsy performed once it is recovered and moved, according to the MMSC.
Each year, an estimated 20,000 whales are killed worldwide by vessel strikes, according to a study done by the International Marine Mammal Project.
