WEST LAFAYETTE, IN. (WLFI) – Thanks to a grant from the Duke Energy Foundation, Tippecanoe County residents can get up to 10 free native trees or shrubs if they agree to remove invasive plants from their property.

The Tippecanoe Invasive Cooperative Taskforce is targeting seven specific invasive species this year: Callery pear (also known as Bradford pear), burning bush, miscanthus, Barberry, Norway maple, privet, and white mulberry.

Invasive species are non-native plants that harm the economy, environment, or human health. Many spread from landscaped yards into local ecosystems, disrupting plant communities and reducing food and shelter for wildlife.

Approved applicants will receive their native tree or shrub at the Tippecanoe County Soil and Water Conservation District Native Tree & Shrub Sale in the fall.

Participants must remove their invasive tree, provide before-and-after photos as proof, and pick up and plant their native replacement.

Applications are open now through August 1st or until 200 replacements have been requested.
