TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – A jaguar known as “Cinco” is expanding his range across the Arizona borderlands, providing researchers with critical evidence that the big cats are establishing themselves in the region.

According to the Wild Cat Research and Conservation Center at the University of Arizona, recent camera detections show Jaguar 5 moving into new areas of the borderlands. The jaguar is navigating rugged terrain and high-elevation corridors that researchers have monitored for years.

“Every time he triggers a different camera, he provides a new piece of the puzzle for jaguar recovery in the U.S.,” the center said.

The sightings were captured through year-round community science monitoring by the independently funded center. Researchers said the detections prove that jaguars are not just passing through the area but are settling in.

The center emphasized that continued monitoring depends on public support to keep the cameras operational.
