A man accused of shooting a police officer in Raymond, New Hampshire, on Saturday afternoon was found dead after an exchange of gunfire with police, authorities said.

Following a search that necessitated a shelter in place being issued for area residents, police made contact with the suspect, 38-year-old Matthew J. Masse, of Raymond, in a wooded area around 10 p.m., where they attempted to take him into custody, the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office said. There was an exchange of gunfire between Masse and the officers, and following the exchange, Masse was found dead. A long gun was found next to him.

“We got him,” New Hampshire State Police Col. Mark Hall said at a press conference early Sunday morning.

An autopsy is scheduled for early this week to determine Masse’s cause and manner of death and the attorney general’s office will conduct an investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

New Hampshire State Police said the situation started when Raymond police were called to a home on Ham Road just after 1:30 p.m. for a report of a man shooting at his family members. When officers arrived, the suspect allegedly opened fire, hitting a veteran Nottingham police officer.

The officer was taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries, Major Brendan Davey said, noting the officer has the agency’s full support. His name is being withheld at this time.

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office said in an update early Sunday morning that the officer is still being treated for his injuries, and no other law enforcement officers or private citizens were injured during Saturday’s incidents.

Officers in Raymond first responded for reports of a man shooting at family members and when they arrived, officials say the suspect fired on police.

After shooting the officer, the gunman ran from the scene into a wooded area, where he remained at large for hours, necessitating a shelter in place order for nearby residents that has now lifted.

A perimeter was set up in an effort to contain the gunman, and law enforcement focused their search on a large parcel of wooded land, bounded generally by Ham Road, Nottingham Road (Route 156), Route 27, and Blake Road in Epping.

Chief Michael Labell said the Raymond Police Department was first made aware of Masse based off an incident that occurred two days ago. Since that time, they were working “feverishly” with other agencies in an attempt to locate him, following up on several leads and deploying the special operations unit Friday where they thought he’d be, without finding him.

There were active felony warrants for Masse based on the incident that happened two days ago, Labell said.

Reni Mylonas, who owns nearby Agape Cakes and Confections, was working through a busy Easter weekend when the situation started.

“We’re keeping an eye out,” she told NBC10 Boston. “We have our cameras locked and loaded, we’re making sure nothing happens, all our doors are locked.”

The attorney general’s office said investigators are currently assessing which responding agencies or officers had police body camera or cruiser footage of any portion of Saturday’s incident. They said additional details are expected to be released after the autopsy has been conducted and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
