After eight games, Daniil Medvedev was raging. After 12, he had broken an unwanted record.
With a 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Matteo Berrettini at the Monte Carlo Masters, Medvedev suffered the first double bagel of his professional tennis career. The 30-year-old Russian, who last month rolled over world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz on his way to the BNP Paribas Open final, could not get anything right Wednesday morning on the French Riviera.
He won 9 points on serve all match. He hit his first serve in 36 percent of the time. He won 17 points in 12 games, out of 67 played.
He also smashed his tennis racket seven times in one meltdown, whaling it against the hoardings, dashing it into the court and then carefully placing its mangled corpse into a bin.

Berrettiniâs win over Medvedev, the world No. 10, is only the fifth 6-0, 6-0 triumph over a top-10 player since the ATP Tour rankings were published in 1973 and the first of the Italianâs career. It is also the first double bagel on the ATP Tour since last yearâs Monte Carlo Masters, when Alex de Minaur handed one out to Grigor Dimitrov.
Medvedev has long had a fraught relationship with clay, but this performance had little in the way of surface tension. His big-serving counterpuncher identity simply does not work when the big serve part is not there, and while clay does reduce serve effectiveness, Medvedevâs deliveries did not land inside the correct lines often enough to make it a factor.
For Berrettini, the win extends an unexpected record of his own: He is 16-0 in games through his first two rounds of the Monte Carlo Masters, after Roberto Bautista Agut retired injured with Berrettini leading their first-round match 4-0.
âI think it was one of the best matches of my life; I only made 3 mistakes. It wasnât easy against a player as tough as Daniil,â he said during his on-court interview.
âThe game strategy was perfect, and my weapons worked really well. Winning like that with a double 6-0 doesnât happen often.â
The Italian faces either JoĂŁo Fonseca or Arthur Rinderknech in the third round. Medvedev will move on, one racket in the bin and two bagels eaten for the first time. He will hope it is the last.
