Pau Cubarsi has been chatting about his relationship with Inigo Martinez after forming an excellent partnership with the veteran in the heart of the Barcelona backline.
Martinez is almost twice Cubarsi’s age but the 18-year-old says they help each other out on the pitch.
“My relationship with him isn’t like that of a father and son, but it’s essential because of his experience,” he told AS.
“We have a good connection. He always tries to help me, and I help him in my own way. He’s a leader, he has character, and he helps us.
“He would undoubtedly make a great captain.”
Cubarsi also backed Marc-Andre ter Stegen to continue with the armband amid speculation he could lose the captaincy at the club.
“We’re very calm. He’s our captain, and we’re delighted that he is,” he added.
“He’s always helped me from the start. We’ve encouraged him, and he encourages us for the games. Nothing has been said here; we want him as captain. He’s been here for many years and has a Champions League title. For us, he’s number one.”
The defender is one of several Barcelona players to come out and back Ter Stegen recently in regards to the captaincy.
The players are expected to vote on the team’s leaders before the start of the new campaign.
