MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The Milwaukee Brewers are mourning the loss of MLB great Phil Garner.
In a statement issued Sunday, the team confirmed Garner, who managed the Brewers from 1992 through 1999, died at the age of 76 on Saturday night.
“The Brewers are saddened to learn of the passing of former manager Phil Garner,” the statement read. “Following a distinguished playing career, Phil served as our manager from 1992-99 and went on to manage the second-most games in franchise history.”
The team added that Garner was a highly respected, beloved man and will be remembered for his caring nature, wisdom, and sense of humor.
Garner managed over 1,100 games for the Brew Crew before heading on to manage the Detroit Tigers (2000-2002) and the Houston Astros (2004-2007). Garner led Houston to their first World Series title in 2005.
As a player, Garner was nicknamed “Scrap Iron” and played in the league for 16 seasons with the Oakland Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros, Los Angeles Dodgers, and the San Francisco Giants.
In 1,860 games, Garner held a batting average of .260.
Garner was also a World Series champion with the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates.
