On Wednesday, April 15, rumors that Savannah Guthrie left set mid-show on Today surfaced online.
According to OK! Magazine, a video of the morning segment recorded live shows Guthrie chatting with Anne Hathaway. In the clip shared on social media, Savannah appeared to introduce the Mother Mary star before Today went to commercial. After the commercial, Savannah’s co-anchor Hoda Kotb was doing the interview. Savannah returned to set shortly after, according to social media users.
In Today’s official YouTube of the show, Savannah doesn’t appear at all, which left some viewers even more confused.
Parade has reached out to Today for comment but has not yet heard back.
It’s entirely possible that this was planned by production, but some viewers were left confused by the switch. It didn’t take long for questions to pop up on X, with many people finding the rumored switch up peculiar. Some people wondered if Guthrie stepped away because she’d received an update about her mother, Nancy Guthrie, who has been missing since February 1.
“Definitely strange, and odd to return for the last minute, unless just trying to not let on to anyone,” one person wrote on X.
“That’s strange! Maybe she got a call and was going to leave after the last set?” someone else suggested.
TikTok users also commented on the rumor.
“She came back for those that actually watched the entire show,” one person wrote, seemingly confirming the videos that were circulating online.
“She didn’t leave, she just wasn’t present for one segment. It’s not unusual for just one of the cohost to do a one-on-one interview with a guest. In today’s show it was Hoda who interviewed Anne Hathaway. Last week, Craig Melvin did a solo interview with another celebrity,” someone else said.
Savannah returned to Today on Monday, April 6, after two months in Arizona with her family following her mom’s disappearance. A source told the Daily Mail that producers at the show have a key phrase to say if there’s a call for Savannah involving an update on her mom. Per the source, Savannah would be told that she’s “needed off set.”
“We would pull her immediately, mid-segment if we had to,” the source told the outlet. “She knows if one of the producers tells her she’s ‘needed off set’ that there’s a development. She would understand that there was news about her mom and we’d take her into an office and tell her, at the same time that another anchor would report it as a breaking story.”
At the time of this writing, there haven’t been any new updates in the Nancy Guthrie case. Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
