A sequel to the 2022 Paramount Pictures tentpole Top Gun: Maverick officially is in development. The studio confirmed during its CinemaCon presentation Thursday in Las Vegas that a script is being written. Tom Cruise is expected to reprise his role of Pete Mitchell, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer is also returning.

Deadline reported in 2024 that a third film in the franchise was in development with Ehren Kruger returning to write the script.
Top Gun: Maverick is the highest-grossing movie of Cruise’s career at $1.49 billion. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, it was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture and won for Best Sound.

Top Gun: Maverick followed Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as he goes back to the famous flight school to teach a new set of pilots how to successfully run a mission. Miles Teller played Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of “Goose,” played by Anthony Edwards in the 1986 first film, who dies during a training exercise.
Paramount CEO David Ellison has made it clear on important that last film was to the studio and that a future sequel would be a big part of the studios plans when it comes to their future theatrical slate.
