Savannah Guthrie reportedly stepped away from a live broadcast of the Today show on April 15, sparking speculation that it might have to do with the disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie.
During the episode, Savannah introduced an interview with Anne Hathaway, which was reportedly then conducted by Hoda Kotb; this led some to speculate that Guthrie had been pulled from the show for an update.
Nancy, 84, was last seen on January 31, 2026 in Tucson, Arizona, and was reported missing the next day.
Savannah Guthrie prompted speculation after seemingly exiting a live broadcast of the Today show.
According to viewers, Guthrie stepped away after introducing an interview with Anne Hathaway during the April 15 episode. Following the introduction, the broadcast cut to a commercial break. When they returned, Hoda Kotb had taken Guthrie’s place and proceeded to speak to the Oscar-winning actress about her upcoming films, Mother Mary and The Devil Wears Prada 2..
After Guthrie stepped away, fans speculated that her brief disappearance may have been associated with her mother Nancy Guthrie’s kidnapping, The Daily Mail reported. However, a source told the outlet that was not the case, saying, “It’s not unusual for a host to tease an upcoming segment at any point, and for another host to do the interview.”
Nancy, 84, was last seen on January 31, 2026 at her home in Tucson, Arizona. She was reported missing the following day.

Further adding credit to the insider’s claim, Savannah returned to the set of the show shortly after Hathaway’s interview, participating in another segment.
Another source informed The Daily Mail that NBC producers reportedly had a code to inform Savannah if there had been any updates about the investigation into her mom’s disappearance. She would reportedly be told that she was “needed off set.”
“We would pull her immediately, mid-segment if we had to,” the source explained. “She would understand that there was news about her mom and we’d take her into an office and tell her, at the same time that another anchor would report it as a breaking story.”

Savannah’s brief absence from the Today show comes just a few days after the journalist returned from a two-month leave of absence. During her absence, Savannah reportedly went Arizona to spend time with her family. She returned to Today on April 6 and resumed her usual co-hosting duties alongside Carson Daly, Al Roker, and Craig Melvin.
In Tucson, members of the community have shown their support for the Guthrie family by setting up signs, pictures, and candles outside of Nancy’s home. The investigation into the 84-year-old’s disappearance is ongoing.
