The Texas Rangers brought aboard Mark Canha this offseason in hopes that the veteran utility man could win a spot on the MLB roster.

Instead, Canha missed out, and he hasn’t made it out of Triple-A yet.
Presumably because of a clause in his contract allowing for this if he wasn’t in MLB yet, Canha was granted his release on Thursday night, the Rangers announced.
Canha will become a free agent, able to sign with any team.
The 37-year old is a career .248 MLB hitter with 121 home runs out of 879 hits.

He played in 46 MLB games for the Royals in 2025 but really struggled with just a .537 OPS.
At his peak, Canha was particularly known for his ability to hit well against left-handed pitching and play multiple positions.

It’s not clear if Canha has much left in the tank this late in his career, but it seems like someone would at least give him a chance.
He has played for the A’s, Mets, Tigers, Brewers, Giants and Royals.

Canha had yet to appear in a game this regular season, not even down at Triple-A.
Whenever a release like this happens, there’s always some wondering about retirement. Canha can’t have that much more baseball to play.
But at least right now, him requesting and being granted his release suggests he’s looking for another chance. It just won’t happen with Texas.
