WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Two people were killed Monday morning when a shooting erupted at northwest Winston-Salem park near a middle school, authorities said.

Officers have found several victims and suspects but continue to search for others, police said, adding that some of those involved are juveniles.

Two “young individuals” planned a fight about 9:50 a.m. at Leinbach Park off Robinhood Road that escalated into a shooting with “multiple victims,” the Winston-Salem Police Department said

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, which also is responding, referred to it as a mass shooting and said “several people have been shot, with 2 deceased.”

Police late Monday morning said they could not confirm the number of victims.

Schools in the area are on secure hold, but police said students are safe. They ask the public to avoid the area.

Norman Road at Robinhood Road and Sally Kirk Road at Norman Road were closed late Monday morning, police said.

Classes were operating as normal at Jefferson Middle School and Mount Tabor High School, police said.

Officers are using drones to search for suspects and urge others to keep personal drones grounded.
