A deputy was shot and a suspect was killed in a traffic stop on Interstate 85 in Anderson County, South Carolina. At 4:35 p.m. Monday, the Anderson County Coroner’s Office responded to I-85 North following a deputy-involved shooting.The shooting happened at Exit 11 near Highway 24 and Highway 243 near Townville.As of 9:36 p.m., the South Carolina Department of Transportation reports that all northbound lanes remain shut down.The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office said around 4 p.m., a K9 officer initiated a traffic stop on a Dodge Challenger and were in the process of interviewing the driver when the deputy requested backup. A second deputy arrived on scene shortly thereafter.During the encounter, the suspect grabbed a firearm from the vehicle and fired at least one shot, striking the second Anderson County deputy. The deputy who initiated the stop returned fire, fatally striking the suspect.Anderson County Sheriff Chad McBride said the master deputy was shot in the chest-area, and that he will have a long recovery.The deputy was immediately airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital.The current status of the deputy is unknown.
