A striking new video of Earth glowing against the vast blackness of space is offering a rare and humbling perspective of our home planet.

Captured by Nasa astronaut Christina Koch during the Artemis II mission, the footage shows Earth as a radiant blue sphere suspended in darkness, a view few humans have ever witnessed firsthand.

The video was recorded from inside Nasa’s Orion spacecraft on the mission’s second flight day, when the spacecraft was approximately 54,500 kilometres away from Earth.

At that distance, far beyond the altitude of the International Space Station, the planet appears as a luminous marble, its atmosphere glowing faintly against the void.

Koch, who became the first female astronaut to travel around the Moon, shared the video as part of Nasa’s outreach efforts to bring the experience of deep space closer to people on Earth.

The footage captures what scientists often refer to as “Earthshine” the sunlight reflected off Earth’s surface and atmosphere, creating a soft but vivid glow even from great distances.

Unlike images taken from low Earth orbit, where continents and city lights are clearly visible, this vantage point compresses the planet into a single, delicate orb. The effect highlights both Earth’s beauty and its fragility, reinforcing a perspective often described by astronauts as the “overview effect,” a profound shift in awareness when viewing Earth from space.

The Orion spacecraft, designed for long-duration missions beyond Earth orbit, features specially engineered windows that allow astronauts to observe space while maintaining safety during extreme conditions. This design played a key role in capturing the clarity of the footage.

The Artemis II mission, part of Nasa’s broader Artemis programme, aims to return humans to the Moon and eventually pave the way for missions to Mars. Koch’s video shows what those missions are ultimately about: not just exploration, but a renewed appreciation of the only world humanity has ever known.

As the clip circulates widely online, it is resonating with viewers, a quiet, powerful image of Earth shining alone in the cosmic dark.
