Whoopi Goldberg and Sara Haines got into a slapping match live on The View.

Haines playfully hit Goldberg on the arm during an interview with Justin Theroux, and Goldberg hit her back. The pair then slapped each other six times.

“Why are we all hitting each other?” Theroux asked.

In perhaps one of the most peculiar developments on the air in recent weeks, Whoopi Goldberg and Sara Haines slapped each other a collective total of six times during a live interview with Justin Theroux and Kate Hudson on Thursday’s The View.

In a wide shot of the Hot Topics table midway through the interview with the Running Point actors, Haines playfully hit the EGOT-winning Ghost actress on the arm, seemingly nodding to a similar feeling about her colleague during Theroux’s observation about working with an “icon” like Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada 2, whom he said is “just like every other actor” in person.

Goldberg then exclaimed, “Ow!” and returned the slap on Haines’ arm. Haines then hit Goldberg again with the back of her hand, prompting another jab from Goldberg.

The cohosts hit each other two additional times, causing enough of a distraction that Theroux actually looked over and asked, “Why are we all hitting each other?”

The camera cut to a close-up of Goldberg, who didn’t laugh at the exchange, but instead appeared visibly annoyed by Haines making contact with her arm.

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to a representative for The View for comment.

Haines and Goldberg’s exchange came just under one month after Goldberg slapped Haines on the air after the latter made an oral sex joke about fellow panelist Joy Behar on the March 25 broadcast.

“My agent at the time told me not to take The View, and, in retrospect, he might’ve been right,” Behar joked, before recalling, “I was told, ‘Change your voice,’ which I can’t. ‘Change your name.'”

Haines cut in, asking Behar, “It’s so iconic, why would you change it?” The 83-year-old responded, “Because I sound like I have Jimmy Hoffa in the back of my throat,” which prompted the audience to laugh.

“Well, did you?” Haines asked, referencing Behar’s running joke about having “dated” famous men in history. Goldberg then hit Haines on her arm with her cue cards.

The View airs weekdays on ABC. Watch Haines and Goldberg in the video above.
