The smoky skies continue to plague central New York as we enter into our third day in a row covered in air quality alerts.

Warm temperatures with hazy sunshine is again likely today, as air quality alerts are in effect till midnight tonight. In similar fashion to yesterday, I’d expect the Department of Environmental Conversation to issue additional alerts for Wednesday.

Current air quality index numbers are putting much of central New York in the unhealthy for sensitive groups category. Those with preexisting health conditions, heart disease or respiratory issues should limit their time outside today.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms could develop on Wednesday, which might be able to lessen the amount of smoke in the atmosphere and help our air quality headed into the late week forecast.

Notice the light blue patches around Syracuse below in the smoke forecast. Smoke particles are captured by raindrops and brought down to the group, improving air quality.

Now this might not be a long-term solution into the weekend, but every little bit helps! We’ll make sure to keep you updated on the latest air quality numbers through the week.
