Nearly 70 households were still without water service Saturday afternoon after a construction mishap Friday left a water main contaminated, the city of Mountain View said.

The city said customers would likely be without safe drinking water until at least Monday, when comprehensive drinking water safety testing is expected to be completed.

A contractor was working on the water main near the intersection of Bonita Avenue and Cuesta Drive when a slurry mix came into contact with the main, according to the city.

Officials said Friday that water service was promptly switched off to about 75 customers shortly after the incident, but clarified Saturday that the number of customers impacted was closer to 67 households.

The streets affected are the 600 block of Cuesta Drive, 600-700 block of Leona Lane, Montalto Drive, Drucilla Drive and Carla Court.

Mountain View issued a “Do Not Use Water” to the affected area Friday night. The State Water Resources Control Board and the city advised affected residents to not use the tap water for drinking, cooking, washing dishes, handwashing, bathing or any other household use until further notice.

The city said water utility crews were on site Saturday afternoon flushing the system and conducting water quality testing. If initial test results confirm the water is safe for limited non-drinking uses, like flushing toilets, Mountain View officials will contact each affected household directly with instructions and required steps before service is restored, the city said.

But comprehensive drinking water safety testing is not expected to be completed until at least Monday. The city is offering hotel stays for affected residents.

The city said crews distributed two cases of bottled water to each affected household Friday evening and City of Mountain View Fire Department personnel were also going door-to-door to check on residents and their needs.

Residents who are affected by the water shutoff near Cuesta Park can utilize the shower facilities that are available at Rengstorff Park Aquatics Center located at 2073 Crisanto Ave. from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. Shower facilities at Eagle Park Pool located at 650 Franklin St. are also available to affected residents on Saturday and Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m.
