Rumors about Apple’s iOS 27 are already coming thick and fast ahead of the iPhone maker’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June. The updated software is expected to include an overhaul to the Siri voice assistant and changes to Liquid Glass that many iPhone users will be grateful for.

But ahead of iOS 27’s launch this Fall, there are also some important questions to be answered, the key one being, which iPhones can run Apple’s upgraded software?

The answer might have been revealed by a Weibo leaker Instant Digital, according to Apple-focused site 9to5Mac. In fact, Weibo has posted a full list of the iPhones he says will be able to run iOS 27 when it launches.

Notably absent from the list is the iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 and iPhone SE 2nd generation — which could all run iOS 26. Therefore, as it stands, it looks like iOS 27 will require an iPhone 12 or later.

Meanwhile, if you want to run the more sophisticated Apple Intelligence features in iOS 27, you will need an iPhone 15 Pro or later model.

iOS 27—Do You Need A New iPhone?

So, as the possible list of iPhones able to run iOS 27 is launched, people will be wondering if they need a new iPhone. In reality, this depends on a few factors.

The first is whether you want to run iOS 27’s Apple Intelligence features, or if you are happy to use your iPhone without access — which would be better for privacy given possible additional data collection.

But if you do want to use AI, you will need an iPhone 15 Pro or above, so you might want to upgrade to the iPhone model coming this Fall, if budgets allow. If not, the iPhone 16 and 17 will be more cost-effective options.

If you don’t care about AI, you are safe to stay on the iPhones on the list, for at least another year, because Apple will still push security updates to these devices.

More details about iOS 27 will be released at WWDC which takes place on June 8 to June 12.
