The restrictions begin Monday, May 4. Violations could result in up to $600 fines.

STATESVILLE, N.C. — The City of Statesville will begin enforcing water restrictions and doling out fines for violations on May 4. This comes as the region has been in drought conditions for months, leading to local water sources, lakes and rivers drying up. 

Statesville is currently in Stage 3 extreme drought conditions. This means Statesville residents will be fined if they violate this prohibited water uses:

Irrigation is prohibited, except: Tree and bed irrigation (drip, bubble, or hand watering only):  Odd-numbered addresses: Saturday 8 PM – Sunday 8 AM  Even/unnumbered addresses: Sunday 8 PM – Monday 8 AM  Athletic fields and golf courses only with an approved plan   Residential vehicle washing is prohibited.  Filling or refilling pools is prohibited (top-offs allowed).  Outdoor fountains/ornamental water use is prohibited (unless supporting fish).  Washing buildings, sidewalks, and streets is prohibited, unless required for safety or health regulations.  Dust suppression, street washing, and hydrant f lushing are limited to essential purposes only.

Statesville says all water customers including businesses must follow these restrictions. However, homes with private wells not connected to the city water system are not subject to these restrictions. 

Anyone seeking an exception must contact the Statesville Water Resources Department.

The fines for violating these restrictions range from $200-$600. The first violation will be $200. The second will be $400. Every violation third and over will be $600. 

Each day is considered a separate violation, Statesville said. If fined, residents can pay at the customer service office on 301 South Center Street. If not paid within 10 days, the fine will be added to the water bill.
