Drivers arriving at one Wisconsin recycling center are being told to curb their speed in an unusually specific manner. The Outagamie County Recycling and Solid Waste facility in Appleton has posted a new limit of 17.3 miles per hour, reports WFRV. In a social media post, county officials say the whole point is to make drivers pause and pay attention to the limit, rather than moving along on “autopilot.”
It’s not the only place trying this tactic: A Colorado Springs shopping center has long posted a limit of 8.2mph, per the Hill. Whether the new trick works remains to be seen: Transportation researchers say physical changes to roads such as speed bumps are typically more effective than simply lowering the speed limit on signage.
