BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Brunswick Regional Water and Sewer H2GO is asking customers to voluntarily reduce water use after the utility’s system came close to triggering mandatory conservation measures in April.
Due to severe drought conditions across North Carolina, increased irrigation demand during the month pushed the water system close to its capacity, utility officials said Tuesday.
Brunswick, New Hanover, Pender, Bladen and Columbus counties are all in a severe drought as of April 23, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor map.
H2GO said cooler temperatures and potential rainfall may provide short-term relief, but continued excessive irrigation strains the system. If drought conditions persist and irrigation demand is not reduced, the utility will be required to implement its Water Shortage Response Plan.
The utility is asking customers to inspect irrigation systems for leaks, broken heads or overspray. Irrigation should operate only on days allowed under H2GO’s mandatory schedule and run during early morning hours between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m.
Customers should adjust run times based on weather conditions, soil moisture and recent rainfall, and limit watering to what is essential for plant survival.
