Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr, team owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy met Monday and will reconvene again later next week to discuss whether Kerr will return for a 13th season as head coach, a league source told The Athletic. That same source said the conversations were “good” and “productive.”
ESPN initially reported the meeting.
Kerr’s future has been a major question mark since a season-ending loss to the Phoenix Suns in the Play-In Tournament on April 17. Kerr huddled with Warriors veterans Steph Curry and Draymond Green at the end of that game and told them he loved them while also acknowledging that he wasn’t sure what would happen next.
Kerr does not have a contract with the Warriors for next season. He has talked publicly about not knowing what his future with the organization will be, as well as his desire for “alignment” moving forward.
Many Warriors staffers were optimistic heading into the final month of the season that Kerr would be back for the 2026-27 campaign, but that optimism has been tempered over the last week in the wake of Kerr’s comments during and after the Suns game. Kerr acknowledged after that season-ending loss that his time in the Bay may be coming to a close and that all coaches have “expiration” dates.
“I still love coaching, but I get it,” Kerr said after the Warriors’ Play-In Tournament loss. “These jobs all have an expiration date. There’s a run that happens, and when the run ends, sometimes it’s time for new blood and new ideas and all that.”
Kerr told The Athletic last month that he still has a passion for coaching and has said repeatedly how much he still loves working with Curry. The question for both parties moving forward is whether they want their professional relationship to continue and if both sides believe they can still bring the best out of each other.
