Star Wars: Starfighter has officially found its villain, with a new star joining Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth in the upcoming Star Wars film.
Who is playing the villain in Star Wars: Starfighter?
According to a new report from Deadline, Matt Smith (House of the Dragon, Doctor Who) is on board to star in the film. While his exact part is unknown, Deadline notes that he will be playing “one of the villain roles.” Casting for the project is expected to continue over the next couple of weeks.
Smith will join the previously announced Gosling and Goth in the film. Filming on Starfighter is expected to begin later this fall, according to Deadline. Prior to the movie’s official announcement, it was recently reported that Oscar winner Mikey Madison was offered a role in the film. However, the Anora star ultimately turned down the movie, reportedly due to both parties not reaching an agreement regarding pay.
Shawn Levy, who previously directed Deadpool & Wolverine, is attached to direct the project.
Star Wars: Starfighter will take place approximately five years after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and will be a standalone project, according to Levy. “This is a standalone. It’s not a prequel, not a sequel. It’s a new adventure. It’s set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet.”
Star Wars: Starfighter will be released in United States theaters on May 28, 2027, from Lucasfilm. The only other Star Wars movie with a theatrical release date at this time is The Mandalorian and Grogu, which arrives about a year earlier, on May 22, 2026.
