Sioux City mom, teacher writes book about her daughter’s unique experience with her hair from the 1st grade perspective

  • August 6, 2025

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – A Girls Inc. alum and Sioux City teacher is sending a message to other children to love who you are and how you were made, inspired by her own daughter’s story.

“Exactly How You Are” was written by Alysha Ivory of Sioux City, inspired by her daughter, McKinley.

She recently made a stop at Girls Inc. to read this new book to the young ladies in the summer program, a program she once attended when she was growing up, and her daughter also attended.

She spends a lot of her time around kids and wrote this book a few years ago to spread a message to other kids.

This book was inspired by what she calls in the book, her daughter’s unique hair, full of curls and bounce.

She is a mom and Head Start teacher who wants other young girls to be confident in who they are.

“Looking at the book, a lot of people like the main character is hair and it’s about hair, but the message is so much deeper than that. It’s teaching kids to love themselves and how they were made, that it’s OK to change your hair too. Oftentimes, I have braids, we get our hair straightened, all those things, but don’t change your hair because somebody else tells you to,” said Ivory.

For the last few weeks, Ivory has been hosting book readings with young girls in the community, and has more to come.

Ivory will be doing a book reading and a local company will be doing a hair demonstration for young girls on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 10 a.m. at B’s Nutrition at 1910 Pierce Street.
