WESTMINSTER, MD. (WBFF) — Elon Musk’s SpaceX, an aerospace company, is taking steps to establish a site in Westminster.
Westminster Mayor Mona Becker said SpaceX purchased a property at 1121 Independence Way. SpaceX filed building permit applications with the city and paid the associated fees on April 21. As of Monday, state property records still showed that Conewago Contractors Inc., a real estate company based in Pennsylvania, owned the property.
Hexagon Purus — a zero-emission mobility company based in Norway — previously operated at the Independence Way site. Becker said the company used to compress gas into canisters at the Westminster location. Hexagon Purus announced in a news release in February that it agreed to divest its aerospace business to SpaceX. “The aerospace business has developed well in recent years and has now reached a stage where an industrial owner with a dedicated aerospace focus is deemed to best support its future,” the release said.
Becker said SpaceX has not been in touch with the city beyond the permit filings, but she welcomed a SpaceX presence. “I would be thrilled to have them in Westminster,” she said, noting how NASA’s Artemis mission renewed public excitement in space programs.
