OAKLEY, Ohio (WKRC) — Something smelled fishy in Oakley this week — and it should have. Tucked away in a box next to a sidewalk was something you might normally see in the ocean or the aquarium.

“I mean, this is Oakley. Nothing over the top really happens here,” said Marcus Calhoun, an Oakley resident.

At least that’s what Calhoun thought. He got home from work Tuesday and started scrolling through social media.

“I caught my eye on a [Citizen app] notification, like, ‘Dead shark found.’ I’m like, ‘OK, that’s not true,” said Calhoun.

He saw an Instagram post saying the same thing. Calhoun decided to run an errand to a nearby market.

“I’m about a block away. This really, really strong stench, like dead-fish smell, and it just permeates throughout the entire location,” said Calhoun

Calhoun and his 3-year-old daughter set out to investigate what was going on. They made their way down a sidewalk in Oakley, and when they reached the corner of Minot and Millsbrae avenues, they looked around the corner and saw police officers.

“And I see just a half a shark kind of plop out of the box, and, at that point in time, like, OK, quick diversion. We’re going to go down and try to get a closer look,” said Calhoun.

Calhoun said the box the shark head was found in was not labeled, nor did it give any indication of where it may have come from.

“Just a plain cardboard box, and it just plopped out. It fit the shark pretty well, so I don’t know. It was really strange,” said Calhoun. “The officers were … pretty much in the same state of shock that I was, so we’re kind of joking around.”

The unique find has plenty of people talking on Facebook. One person says she also saw the shark head out of the box and later being bagged up.

Others are speculating this sea creature’s remains could have been sneaked out of a nearby high school.

“What’s going on? Where did it come from? What happened?” said Calhoun.
