Possible migrant detention center in Nebraska; an update to construction at Eppley Airfield; arrests after a June homicide in north Omaha

  • August 6, 2025

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – First Alert 6 has the headlines you need to know to get your Wednesday started.

1 hospitalized after crash on Interstate 480 exit ramp in Omaha

One person is injured after a crash just off Interstate 480 in Omaha.

The crash happened shortly after midnight Wednesday on the I-480 exit onto Martha street, in the South Omaha area.

Our First Alert 6 crew on the scene reports the car ended up crashing into a fence in the incident.

Police dispatch says initial reports show the victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Lawmakers respond to potential of migrant detention center in Neb.

Nebraska is part of a narrowed list of states that could potentially be home to new migrant detention centers, according to a CBS report.

The other states being considered are Arizona and Louisiana. The news comes a month after President Donald Trump announced the opening of “Alligator Alcatraz,” a detention center for illegal immigrants built in the Everglades.

First Alert 6’s sister station in Lincoln, 10/11, reached out to Senator Pete Ricketts about the possibility of the facility coming to Nebraska.

“I have not heard that any are coming to Nebraska,” Ricketts said. “But this is part of why President Trump was elected, to be able to clean up the Biden administration’s mess with the open-border policy.”

First Alert 6 reached out to Gov. Jim Pillen earlier this week. His office said it was too early to comment on the matter.

“…At this time, it is premature to comment on potential detention operations. Gov. Pillen will make details public at the appropriate time,” the statement reads.

Suspect in North Omaha shooting that wounded 7 appears in court

The man arrested in connection to a North Omaha shooting on Saturday appeared in court Tuesday.

Maurice Brown, 31, of Council Bluffs, is facing seven counts of using a gun to commit a felony, six counts of second-degree assault, one count of first-degree assault, and one count of possession of a gun by a prohibited person.

In court, prosecutors shared that video footage of the incident was captured and that Brown arrived at a local hospital with wounds before his arrest.

Bond for Brown was set at $500,000. His next hearing is scheduled for Sept. 10.

The shooting happened at Kelly’s Liquor, near 30th and Pinkney streets, just after 4:30 a.m. Saturday. Officers said there was a large crowd in the parking lot when an argument started and the shooting happened.

In addition to Brown, six others — ages 21, 22, 38, 26, 30, and 43 — were injured in the incident, according to a release.

2 arrested in connection to June homicide in North Omaha

The Omaha Police Department has arrested two people in a June homicide investigation.

Police report Jonathan Nauden, 25, is charged with manslaughter in connection with the shooting. His bond was set at $500,000.

The charges were brought against Nauden last week but he was already in jail for a separate charge of possession of a controlled substance.

A second suspect, Laquantrey Jackson, 24, was booked for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. His bond was set at $50,000 and his court appearance was set for Sept. 4.

Nauden is scheduled to appear in court Thursday for a bond review and a preliminary hearing Sept. 3.

The arrests come after Mandrell Swiney, Jr., 28, was shot and killed near 30th and Larimore Avenue around 4 a.m. on June 22.

Omaha Parks and Rec asking for public input on 20-year Master Plan

The Omaha Parks and Recreation Department has released its 20-year Comprehensive Master Plan.

Officials say they have spent a year of research and conversations with residents and partners on where they should focus their efforts.

There are five key issues Parks and Rec plans to address in their plan: limited staffing, low event and camp registration, varying park conditions, low connectivity between trails, and maintenance improvements.

The department is looking for comments and suggestions before it’s finalized next month. The survey is open through next Friday.

We are told the survey will be followed by the final phase of the project: The Final Presentation and adoption of that plan in mid-September.

Omaha Airport Authority gives update on renovation projects at Eppley

In an update to the renovations at Eppley Airfield in Omaha, airport officials say the Terminal Drive and Glass Canopy Project is complete.

The canopy is now placed over what will become a new entryway for travelers flying to and from Omaha. Visitors can just look up to see the newest addition.

The entryway project is separate from the bigger renovation happening in the airport. Officials say the main project is about 40% complete.

“To come to someplace that’s really nice and put together really helps with the travels,” visitor Starlette Dossou told First Alert 6.

Officials said the projects are on schedule and everything should be finished by late 2028.
