FALCON, Colo. (KKTV) – Colorado Parks and Wildlife responded to a Falcon home Tuesday after a 250-pound black bear got stuck in a window well.
CPW said the bear found itself stuck in the well right outside a family’s basement window.
Resident Kristen Nedbalek said when she got home, the bear was sitting down right outside her window. She said a few neighbors arrived to watch as the bear fell asleep in the window well.
“We’re all just kind of standing around in the basement, just watching it in the window,” Nedbalek said. “It was just very surreal.”
Nedbalek said wildlife officers responded and were walking at the top of the window well as the bear watched from below.
“It would just kind of wake up, look around, and just kind of start knocking off again,“ Nedbalek said. ”It was doing this really cute thing where it was just like, kind of holding on to its back leg, kind of like a cat does.”
The family said wildlife officers had already put out a bear watch after earlier sightings in the area.
This moment had a special meaning for Nedbalek. She said minutes before finding out about the bear, she had learned her grandfather had passed away.
“It certainly seemed like it was his way of saying goodbye, since I wasn’t able to say goodbye to him,” Nedbalek said.
She said her grandfather passed away Tuesday morning.
“Four minutes after I found out, I got a text saying, ‘Hey, we have a visitor at our house’,” Nedbalek said. “So, I come home. I left work for obvious reasons. And there’s just this bear sitting down here in our window.”
Wildlife officials eventually tranquilized the bear, brought it into the home through the window, tied its legs and carried it up the stairs and out the front door to relocate it.
CPW said the bear was then given a wake-up drug and taken three hours southwest of Colorado Springs to be relocated to a more appropriate habitat.
