David Muir’s show was interrupted last night (August 5) to tell viewers that numerous US states are either suffering from “extreme heat” or “unhealthy” air quality. This comes as Canada continues to battle wildfires, which has caused smoke to cross the border into America.
Whilst presenting World News Tonight last night (August 5), David brought on Chief Meteorologist Ginger Zee who spoke about the potentially dangerous weather conditions. Air quality alerts remain in effect for millions of people across 13 states from Minnesota to New Hampshire due to the wildfire smoke.
Standing near the Hudson river, Ginger showed viewers the grey sky caused by the thick, wildfire smoke spreading across the East Coast. She explained that the air quality is in “the 126 category” which is considered “dangerous” for vulnerable groups.

As well as New York, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Syracuse are all areas affected by the smoke. Ginger also noted that those living near the Great Lakes have been affected by these fires for nearly a week. However, she does believe by tomorrow night, the smoke will move towards the Poconos and the Catskills.

On the West Coast, Americans are facing an “extreme heat” warning with temperatures expected to reach up to 118 degrees in Palm Springs, Tucson, and Phoenix.
But this wasn’t the only big story for David as he was forced to pause his usual coverage to give viewers a “gruesome” update on a recent murder.
During the same episode, David announced that a man accused of murdering a family of four had been captured by the authorities. Austin Drummond was apprehended in Tennessee after a six-day manhunt.
He has also been accused of abducting and then abandoning an infant, but the baby has been reported to be “safe and healthy”.
David showed images of Drummond “dripping in sweat” as he was detained by law enforcement officers.
“He thought he could outrun us but he was wrong,” said US Marshal Tyreece Miller.

Tennessee Police Department also said Drummond was seen on a security camera prior to his arrest, carrying a rifle. He was also thought to be staying overnight in a vacant building whilst on the run.
It is further believed that Drummond knew the four murdered victims, but officers are still investigating a motive.
According to detectives, the sister of one of the decedents is the suspect’s girlfriend.
