All eastbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway were closed between exits 46 and 48 in Plainview due to a collision involving two tractor-trailers, Nassau police said.
The incident began sometime before 3:30 a.m. near the Sunnyside Boulevard exit, according to the online website 511NY.
Initial reports indicated the crash also caused a fuel spill that authorities were attempting to address.
Nassau police could not immediately provide additional information, including whether anyone was hurt in the crash or how long the roadway will be closed.
Photos from the scene show a badly damaged cab of a tractor-trailer that appears to be jackknifed.
Eastbound traffic was being diverted to the service road, according to authorities.
