Viewers reported around 6:00 a.m. they saw the bear on Isla Avenue, near Herndon and West Avenues.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife responded but could not find the animal.

They stayed in the area for quite a while but left just before 10:00 a.m. due to there not being any more sightings.

They believe it may have gone back to the San Joaquin River.

Councilmember Mike Karbassi released the following statement regarding the sightings:

A brown bear is not the usual visitor I have the pleasure of welcoming to District 2 in Northwest Fresno, but I am immensely grateful to the California Department of Fish & Wildlife for their incredibly rapid response to the area to ensure the bear returned to a more appropriate habitat without causing any harm to residents or property. If you ever encounter large wildlife such as this brown bear, please call the CA Department of Fish & Wildlife at 559-649-1125.

If you caught video or pictures of the bear, you can share it using our Chime In section on the FOX26 website.
