Early Friday morning fire brings crews to Omaha home
The Omaha Fire Department was called to a house fire Friday morning.
Firefighters got to the scene near 108th and Nicholas streets, in the West Omaha area, just before 4 a.m.
Police dispatch did not report any injuries to First Alert 6. We are on the scene now to find out more.
University of Nebraska, others report major hack to Canvas systems
Canvas is back up and running for most users Friday morning after a major hack impacted college students nationwide.
Canvas is a school learning management system where students turn in homework, sign up for classes and take exams. Reports indicate a hacking group calling themselves “Shiny-Hunters” claimed responsibility for the attack.
Large public school systems and top universities like Harvard and Princeton reported a ransom note signed by a hacking group had appeared on the homepage of their schools’ Canvas sites.
The University of Nebraska system and Creighton both confirmed they were impacted.
According to the parent company’s website, Canvas has more than 30 million active users globally, with more than 8,000 institutions as customers.
Man accused in deadly Omaha hit-and-run expected in court Friday
The man accused in a deadly hit-and-run near 85th and Blondo streets in Omaha is due in court Friday.
Police say 43-year-old Joshua Olson hit 63-year-old Osborn Henderson Jr. last November as he crossed the street. Olson then allegedly drove off.
Officers say Olson later admitted he was driving in the area that night. In January, he was cited for motor vehicle homicide.
Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine says prosecutors filed the charges they believe they can prove beyond a reasonable doubt. The maximum punishment for motor vehicle homicide as a misdemeanor is one year in jail.
Fallen Trooper, Omaha native Kyle McAcy to be added to memorial Friday
A fallen Nebraska State Trooper will be honored Friday in Grand Island.
Trooper Kyle McAcy died last February responding to a crash on I-80 during a snowstorm when a snowplow backed into him.
The 31-year-old Omaha native and 10-year veteran of the patrol will have his name added to the Nebraska Law Enforcement Memorial on Friday morning, along with corrections officer Kolby Baber.
Next week, McAcy’s name will also be added to the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Bellevue Food Pantry to hold groundbreaking for new location Friday
The Bellevue Food Pantry is set to break ground Friday on a new, expanded facility at the site of the former Bellevue Public Library.
The space will be transformed into a modern food pantry and community hub.
Pantry staff said their current location is too small. That building is just a little more than 1,000 square feet and the library is about 20,000.
Executive Director Aaron Bowen said the building is the perfect place to serve the community. A groundbreaking ceremony is set for 10 a.m.
Omaha Streetcar tracks to be attached by crews Friday
Crews will be attaching portions of streetcar track in Omaha on Friday morning.
They’ll use a process called thermite welding. It’s a high-temperature, exothermic welding process that uses a mixture of metal powder to generate molten iron.
According to a release, that iron can reach temperatures of more than 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
It’s widely used for joining, repairing and welding railways together without requiring external power, the release states.
