SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — Jason Richardson didn’t grow up inside the traditions of golf, and that was the point.
When he first stepped onto a course, he saw something others had stopped noticing—uniformity. The same colors. The same cuts. The same quiet adherence to rules no one could quite explain anymore.
Golf was growing, but not evolving at the same pace as the people now picking up clubs. So Richardson started with a question: what if the game looked like the people playing it?
What began in 2017 as a self-funded side project printing bold, unconventional polos and testing them in the wild, often at tournaments like the rowdy crowds of the WM Phoenix Open, quickly became something more. Those early rounds doubled as focus groups.
The feedback wasn’t subtle. People stared. They asked questions. They wanted in.
Bad Birdie wasn’t built to disrupt for disruption’s sake. It was built to reflect a shift already happening. Younger players were entering the game with different expectations — less interested in preserving tradition and more interested in expressing themselves within it. The brand leaned into that tension, not away from it.
Nearly a decade later, Bad Birdie has grown into a multi-channel business spanning direct-to-consumer, wholesale, green grass and experiential retail. As golf expands and brings in new players, new audiences and new energy, the real opportunity is to help shape it and to influence how the next generation experiences the game, both on and off the course.
Bad Birdie does that through design, bold prints, performance fabrics and pieces that move seamlessly from fairway to afterhours. But more importantly, it does so through perspective — a belief that individuality isn’t a departure from the sport, but a necessary evolution of it.
