Caitlin Clark is back for her third WNBA season, and she’s clearly not the same player who absorbed heavy physical play in her first two years.

In the Indiana Fever’s 2026 season opener against the Dallas Wings, Clark showed a noticeably “dirtier” and more aggressive side, flipping the narrative on who delivers the cheap shots.

Late in the second quarter, Clark shoved Dallas guard Aziaha James to the ground in a move that immediately went viral. The play drew strong reactions from fans, with many calling it a “cheap shot” and suggesting Clark should be fined. For the first time, Clark was the one being accused of crossing the line instead of being on the receiving end.

A noticeable evolution in Clark’s game

In her rookie and sophomore seasons, Clark was often the target of overly physical defense. Opponents frequently got away with extra contact, knowing officials would let them play through it. Now, it appears Clark has had enough. Her performance against the Wings — 20 points, seven assists, and five rebounds — came with four personal fouls, including the notable shove on James.

Fans were quick to point out the contrast. “This is worse than what Chennedy did to Clark,” one fan commented, referencing past hard fouls on the Fever star. Others noted that Clark is now the one initiating contact and pushing back, signaling a tougher mentality heading into Year 3.

Clark has clearly developed a more physical edge to complement her elite skill set. After dealing with injuries and constant physicality early in her career, she looks determined to dictate terms on the court rather than just endure them.

Fever fall short despite Clark’s strong showing

Despite Clark’s solid debut, the Fever came up short in a tight 107-104 home loss to the Dallas Wings. Aziaha James finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in the victory for Dallas. The loss doesn’t change the bigger picture for Indiana.

With Clark playing more assertively and showing she’s willing to get “dirty” when necessary, the Fever appear to have a more battle-tested version of their superstar. This physical evolution could be key as they look to contend deeper into the 2026 playoffs. Next up, Indiana travels to face the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday before returning home for a four-game homestand.

Clark’s willingness to mix it up physically marks a clear step forward in her development. After two seasons of mostly taking the hits, she’s now more than ready to dish them out.
