LAKE GENEVA, Wis. (WBAY) – A wayward stork native to southern Africa was captured late Thursday, according to Safari Lake Geneva.
The owner of the animal park, Jay Christie, and its director of conservation, Maggie Christie, rescued the stork, which is currently in quarantine.
“She surrendered without resistance,” Christie stated in a news release. “She is remarkably tame by stork standards.”
“It’s unlikely she would have survived another month,” Christie said, noting a number of close calls with traffic. “And, of course, she would never survive one of our winters.”
Manatou storks have one of the largest wingspans of the world’s birds, but how it sailed into Wisconsin is a mystery. A woman who recorded a video of the stork from about 50 feet away said it appeared to have a tag on its leg.
Action 2 News reached out to USDA Wildlife Services on Wednesday, which said the federal agency was not asked to help recover the bird.
