Alvin ISD shut down Marek and Wilder elementary schools due to “significant water damage” on Wednesday after thunderstorms doused the Houston area overnight.
Classes are expected to resume on Thursday, ISD officials said.
“We appreciate your patience, understanding, and cooperation as we work to resolve this issue and ensure the campuses are safe for students and staff,” officials wrote in a Facebook post Wednesday morning.
Cleanup crews were on scene at around 8 a.m., and school officials were still assessing the full scale of the damage, Renae Rivas, the chief communications officer at Alvin ISD, told the Chronicle. The two schools sit roughly a mile and a half apart from one another within a pocket of small lakes in Pearland’s Shadow Creek Ranch area.
“We are working very, very hard to try to get school going tomorrow,” Rivas said.
Rivas said parents should monitor updates via email, social media and local news coverage.
