TOLEDO, Ohio — Artists looking to leave a permanent mark on a historic Toledo landmark have been given some extra time to submit their ideas.
The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo announced Friday it has extended the submission deadline for the new Swayne Field public art project to June 1.
The extension gives creatives more time to compete for a permanent sculpture installation. The piece is intended to serve as a visual anchor for a broader $3.6 million infrastructure project at the multi-acre Swayne Field shopping center.
The site revitalization is a collaborative effort between the Arts Commission’s Art in Public Places Program and the City of Toledo Department of Housing and Community Development and is backed by federal grants, loans, and private investments.
Eligibility is limited to individual artists or teams who live within a 150-mile radius of Toledo.
Interested creators must apply through the Arts Commission’s official website by submitting a letter of interest, a current resume, and digital examples of past work.
A design review board, which includes residents from the Englewood neighborhood, will review the submissions. The panel will select up to three finalists who will each create concept proposals and give presentations.
The winning proposal is expected to be announced on August 24.
Opened in 1909, the field originally served as the home stadium for the Toledo Mud Hens and hosted Negro League baseball matchups before it was redeveloped as a shopping center in the 1950s.
