The Atlanta Dream are 4-1 to start the season, and they’ve found many different ways to win the games they’ve been in so far. In almost every game they’ve played so far, coming back from deficits has been their thing, which has gotten them their four wins.
After their win against the Phoenix Mercury, Karl Smesko mentioned the intensity of the game and how these types of environments they’ve played in are helping them grow as a team.
“It feels like playoff basketball to me as far as both teams are playing,” Smesko said. I think that’s gonna make everybody better. It kind of lets us know that when teams play Atlanta, this is a big game for everybody now, and we’re going to see everybody’s best shot.
“I think constantly playing against the team’s best effort, I think it makes you stronger through the course of the season. I think that’s one reason the best teams tend to do better, and then do better in the playoffs, is that they’re seeing a different team than other teams see. I noticed that so far this year, people are out to play against Atlanta.”
Regardless of whether they’re getting the other team’s best efforts, the Dream have raised their level and are winning the games in crunch time. They’re the best defensive team in the league, and it’s no surprise that they’ve leaned on that side of the ball to help them.
“It feels good, but it’s the start of the season,” Jordin Canada said. “We just wanna continue to keep getting better. That’s what we preach every day. Just the process of getting better and knowing that we have such a long season ahead, but we want to continue to do the things that we do that we need to do to clean up on the offensive and defensive end.”
