A new documentary titled “Nevermore: The Raven Effect” is set to explore the career and influence of the innovative and controversial professional wrestler, Raven (Scott Levy). The film, directed by Geordie Day, will feature interviews with a host of wrestling legends and will have special theatrical screenings that include a Q&A and meet and greet with Raven himself. Scroll down to see the trailer.
An “Artist” in a Brutal Business
The documentary examines Raven’s unique place in wrestling history, particularly his groundbreaking work in Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW). A press release highlights a quote from Smashing Pumpkins frontman and wrestling promoter Billy Corgan, who asks, “Wrestling is such a brutal business, it doesn’t surprise people that it attracts sociopaths, fame whores, coke whores and adrenaline whores, but why did it attract an artist?” The film positions Raven as that artist, a “grunge prophet who turned personal pain into ecstatically violent, blood-soaked theater.”
A Pivotal Shift in Wrestling
“Nevermore: The Raven Effect” focuses on how Raven was “instrumental in setting the tone in the no-holds-barred ECW and in the process influencing the direction of wrestling as we know it today.” The film promises to tell the “tortured rise of one of wrestling’s original visionaries and misfits — a man who rewrote the rules through dark genius, psychological edge, and groundbreaking angles.”
A Star-Studded Lineup
The documentary will feature “raw reflections from Raven himself and hardcore stories” from a long list of his peers and contemporaries. Among those interviewed for the film are Chris Jericho, Billy Corgan, Rob Van Dam, Diamond Dallas Page, Bubba Ray Dudley, Tommy Dreamer, The Sandman, Perry Saturn, Kevin Sullivan, Blue Meanie, Shane Douglas, and many more.
Screenings and Q&A
Special screenings for the documentary have been announced for Boston and Chicago. The Lexington Venue in Boston will host a screening on August 23, and The Logan Theatre in Chicago will host one on August 29. For both events, fans will have the option to purchase a $30 ticket for the movie and a post-screening Q&A with Raven, or a $100 ticket that also includes a pre-show meet and greet with the ECW legend from 7:15-7:45 PM. The film is directed by award-winning filmmaker Geordie Day, who previously directed “Tough Guy: The Bob Probert Story.” “Nevermore: The Raven Effect” aims to explore how Raven’s extreme personality thrived in an extreme environment, and as the press release asks, “how did he live to tell the tale?”
