The Connecticut Sun currently hold the worst record during the early goings of the regular season at 1-7. But they’ve been missing a key piece for most of the year thus far. The Sun have been without Brittney Griner for five of the team’s first eight games as she’s been battling a rib injury.
As the Sun continue on their current road trip with a game against the Portland Fire, they will once again be without Brittney Griner as she’s been ruled out due to said rib injury. Following Wednesday’s game, the Sun will return home for a matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday, May 30.
Griner was one of the Sun’s major offseason acquisitions after signing with the team as a free agent. She spent last season with the Atlanta Dream, the first season of her career in which she did not suit up for the Phoenix Mercury. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft, Griner played the first 11 seasons of her career with the Mercury.
In the three games she’s appeared in this season, Griner has been averaging 15.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists with splits of 52.9 percent shooting from the field and 75 percent shooting from the free-throw line in a little over 27 minutes per game.
A nine-time All-Star, Griner is in her 13th season in the WNBA. She signed a one-year contract with the organization for what will be their final year in Connecticut. The franchise is set to move to Houston beginning with the 2027 season as a rebirth of the original Comets franchise.
