APPLE GROVE, W.Va. (WCHS) — Nucor Steel West Virginia recognized a team of students for transforming metal into a sculpture representing Mountain State culture.
Boone County Technical Center students won a sculpture competition with a piece entitled “Tiny the Coal Mining Bear,” according to a news release from Nucor.
The release said a team cut and welded strands of steel to create a bear donning a helmet and belt while carrying a hammer and lunchbox.

Nucor provided 500 pounds of steel along with the theme of hometown pride to five teams, including students from Lincoln County High School, Mason County Career Center, Putnam Career & Technical Center and Roane-Jackson Technical Center.
Technical judges and thousands of community votes were considered to select a winner.
