ESTES PARK, Colo. — The highest continuous paved road in the United States, which is also one of Colorado’s most popular scenic roads, is back open.

After facing a snow-related setback that extended its closure through Memorial Day weekend, Trail Ridge Road has officially reopened for the season, according to a Rocky Mountain National Park release Friday.

The park advised visitors of the road’s icy conditions because of melting snow and possible freezing temperatures.

There won’t be nightly closures as of now, the release said, but drivers are asked to be prepared to adjust their travel plans due to quick weather changes at higher elevations. For information about the road’s status, people can call the recorded status line at 970-586-1222.

The Alpine Visitor Center and Trail Ridge Store are currently closed, according to the release. Any visitors who do not respect barricades and enter closed areas will be cited.

Connecting the towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake, Trail Ridge Road climbs to 12,183 feet, making it the highest continuous paved road in the nation.

Trail Ridge Road typically opens in late May. Last year, the road opened on May 30. Snow plow operators began clearing the snow in the middle of April.
