Arizona Attorney General Kristin Mayes is urging the state’s utility regulators to approve a sweeping $8 million broadband settlement with Frontier and Verizon, which she says is designed to end years of unreliable service in Navajo and Apache counties.
The agreement, announced July 30 by Mayes, comes after her office filed a lawsuit against Frontier Communications and several subsidiaries in Maricopa County Superior Court on July 28. The suit alleges Frontier repeatedly failed to provide reliable phone and internet service, particularly in rural northern Arizona, and misled customers about the speeds they would receive.
“For too long, residents in Navajo and Apache counties have suffered from unreliable internet and phone service that has jeopardized public safety, hurt local businesses and put lives at risk during emergencies,” Mayes said in a statement. “These settlements will hold Frontier and Verizon accountable … and bring major investments in broadband infrastructure.”
The settlement now awaits final approval from the Arizona Corporation Commission.
