The Sparks extended their win streak to three with a 92-87 victory over the Washington Mystics.

Shakira Austin opened the game with a layup for the Mystics. Both teams started well offensively, trading baskets. Erica Wheeler was leading LA with four points. Everyone, but Ariel Atkins, had already scored points for Los Angeles. Austin had seven points for Washington.

At the 4:50 mark, the Mystics were up by two.

With a hook shot, Nneka Ogwumike made history, becoming the Sparks’ all-time leader in field goals made.

Despite the offense stalling for LA, Cameron Brink came in and provided productive minutes, scoring 4 points. Dearica Hamby scored on a layup as the quarter came to an end.

Neither team could find its shot to start the second period. Nneka scored the first points, converting on a layup. Cotie McMahon gave Washington their first points of the quarter on a layup.

At the 5:46 mark, it was a two-point game.

Nneka was now leading Los Angeles with eight points, while Hamby was close behind with five. Atkins finally got on the board with a midrange jumper. Brink continued her great play off the bench. She made it a one-point game after adding five more points to her total.

Going into halftime, the purple and gold were up by five.

Austin scored the first three points of the third period for the Mystics. Kiki Iriafen added four points. It was Nneka’s five points and a midrange jumper from Atkins that helped keep LA close. Hamby suddenly erupted for four points of her own that put Los Angeles in the lead.

Luckily for the Sparks, Sonia Citron missed a few triples in a row that would’ve put the Mystics ahead.

The last two minutes of the quarter were filled with foul calls and free throws. As the time was winding down, Washington scored five in a row. LA responded fast with five points in a row for themselves. Wheeler drained a 3-pointer that put Los Angeles up by eight going into the fourth.

The final frame began the same way the third period did, with both teams starting slow. Iriafen was fouled and converted on one of two free throws, putting the Mystics on the board first. She also scored on a layup to make it a five-point game.

Wheeler responded with a layup of her own.

Atkins and Wheeler then scored on back-to-back shots that forced Washington to call a timeout. Out of the break, they only managed a free throw from Citron. At the six-minute mark, the Sparks were up by eight. Then, the Mystics cut the deficit.

Hamby responded with a layup that put LA up by five with 3:14 left.

Atkins then fouled out, putting Alicia Florez Getino at the line, where she converted on both free throws. Washington was not going down without a fight. Austin put the Mystics on her back, with five big-time points that tied the game.

Nneka responded with a clutch triple, putting the Sparks in the lead with 1:51 left.

Wheeler scored on a shot off the glass, keeping LA ahead. Citron then ignited for four in a row that made it a one-point game with 36.5 seconds left. Wheeler converted on a layup, out of a break, that gave the Sparks a larger advantage with 29.8 seconds left.

Austin responded with a layup on the other end. Citron fouled Wheeler, who converted on both free throws, making it a three-point lead for Los Angeles with 15.8 seconds left. Iriafen airballed a triple. The Mystics had to play the foul game to extend the contest. Wheeler knocked down another pair of clutch free throws with 4.3 seconds left, icing the win for the Sparks.

Nneka finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds and two assists. Brink ended with 16 points and two rebounds. Hamby had 14 points, seven rebounds, nine assists and four steals.

Wheeler had her best game of the young season with 21 points, two rebounds and eight assists. Atkins logged eight points with two rebounds and two assists.

The Sparks’ next game will be against the Connecticut Sun on Saturday at 3:00 PM PT.
