Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White has addressed the organization’s approach to reporting Caitlin Clark’s game status to ensure compliance with WNBA regulations.
The Fever’s management of Clark’s injury status drew attention last week, prompting the team to provide clarification before its upcoming contest.
Ahead of Wednesday’s home game against the Portland Fire, the Fever declared Clark unavailable just two hours prior to tip-off – a decision that seemed inconsistent with league injury reporting protocols. The unexpected withdrawal surprised fans and analysts. Meanwhile, Clark has risked a WNBA fine over her latest media refusal as fans make their feelings clear.
“WNBA teams must report information concerning player injuries, illnesses, other medical conditions, or rest for all WNBA games. By 5 p.m. local time the day before a game (other than the second day of a back-to-back), teams must designate a participation status and identify a specific injury, illness, other medical condition, or other reason for any player whose participation in the game may be affected for any reason,” WNBA rules state, leading to the Fever being issued a warning from the league.
Moving ahead to the Fever’s away game against the Golden State Valkyries, Clark was designated as probable before ultimately taking the court and logging nearly 30 minutes in the 90-88 loss.
Head coach White spoke about the matter and explained how Indiana plans to maintain adherence to the WNBA’s regulations following the team’s warning from the league. “The most important thing is that what happened last week, we don’t want that to happen again,” White said, reports the Mirror US.
“Just to make sure that there’s clarity and no issues with league policy, I think that we will (list her as probable). You can expect to see it ‘probable’ going forward.”

Injury worries have emerged again after Clark managed just over 10 WNBA games last season as the Fever advanced to the Playoff semifinals.
Clark has been battling back problems since the start of this season and has worn a spinal brace while out for the Fever.
Clark also addressed her own availability earlier this month. The star guard acknowledged that some form of injury or knock might need to be reported on a regular basis.
“At this point, maybe I’ll need to be listed as soreness on every injury report,” she said.
“If I don’t feel a hundred percent confident in my body on game five of the year, I don’t know if that’s really worth it in that scenario. I’m sore. That’s just the reality of it.”
The Fever are hoping Clark can steer clear of lengthy injuries this year, particularly after getting close to the WNBA Finals last year.
Indiana sits at 4-3 in 2026. Thursday’s loss to the Valkyries marked the Fever’s first defeat after three straight victories.
