About £4 billion has been spent on transfers by Europe’s top five leagues this summer – that is the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and Serie A.
Of this, the Premier League’s transfer spending has reached about £1.8b since the transfer window first opened at the start of June.
It is the most amount of money spent by England’s top division in history.
Of the total figure, more than £1bn has come from six teams, the traditional so-called ‘big six’ in the Premier League era – Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham.
Coming in second place are the Serie A clubs, who have spent more than £700m on transfers this summer with the Italian league’s top arrival, Ardon Jashari, joining AC Milan for about £31m.
Luis Diaz’s £65.5m transfer from Liverpool to Bayern Munich is the most expensive buy by a Bundesliga club so far with the German sides splurging more than £500m in purchases already.
La Liga has spent around £425m in incoming with Dean Huijsen’s £50m move from Bournemouth to Real Madrid the most expensive transfer into the Spanish top flight.
Ligue 1 clubs, meanwhile, have spent a total of about £300m on new players this summer.
