Cal Poly for the first time in program history has advanced past the Regional round of the NCAA Baseball tournament and into the Super Regionals, with a 5-2 victory over Saint Mary’s Sunday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
It was won off the back of a strong start by Josh Volmerding who went six innings of two run ball against a Saint Mary’s squad that is at the top of the leaderboards in a ton of offensive categories. Ryan Tayman went yard to tie the game in the sixth inning and to tie the program record for home runs in a season with 18. That was followed by Gavin Spiridonoff launching one into the Westwood night for a three run blast to give the Mustangs the lead for good. Alejandro Garza broke the career hit record with a single in the seventh as part of a two-hit performance.
Corden Pettey threw a scoreless seventh inning while Nick Bonn escaped an eighth inning jam on the way to a six out save and his 17th save of the year.
Cal Poly awaits the winner of West Virginia-Kentucky in Morgantown Monday night. A West Virginia win means that the Mustangs will play their Super Regional in Morgantown, while a Kentucky win means that the two sides will submit bids for the chance to be the hosts for the Super Regional.
That three game series, whether in Morgantown, Lexington or San Luis Obispo will take place from June 5-8.
