MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) –
Students at Poplar Springs Elementary School in Meridian are starting out the new school year with an innovative addition.
The school celebrated the arrival of its brand-new book vending machine with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday morning. The book vending machine is part of the school’s ongoing commitment to promoting literacy, rewarding positive behavior, and making reading fun and accessible for all students.
“They’ll have to meet goals,” said Bridget Purpy, librarian at the school. “The teachers will set certain goals for them based on their reading level and the number of times that they’re reading and their grade level of course. As they meet those goals and earn those points, they’ll get to go take a book home that they’ll get to keep forever.”
First Mississippi Federal Credit Union donated the book vending machine to Poplar Springs Elementary School.
