If you have spent any time camping, or hiking in the woods around New York State this summer there is a good chance you have seen a black bear or two. This bear that was captured on a trail camera was wondering through the woods overnight.

It has been a great summer so far and there is still time to get that last road trip our outdoor adventure in before the classes begin or the kids head back-to-school. This is a solid reminder that bears are do what bears do and we need to keep food and garbage stored away properly.

There is a hunting season for bears in New York State that will begin this September for some areas and October for others. Keep in mind the legal hinting hours “Only allowed to hunt deer and bear from 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset”.

The bear population in the areas that I hunt in Western New York seem to be steady or slightly on the rise. In the early spring, I have been seeing a bear or two and a few cubs every now and again. If you see bears in your neighborhood, it is best to leave them alone and try to keep your yard unattractive to bears who are most likely looking for a quick snack.
